DPD Investigating Self Checkout Shoplifting

Monday, November 14th, 2022

The Dalton Police Department is asking for the public's help to identify a woman who attempted to "skip scan" a large number of items while checking out at a self-checkout kiosk. Employees at the store also believed that the woman swapped the bar code stickers on several items she purchased.

The incident happened last month at the Dollar General location at 511 N. Glenwood Avenue. Shortly before 7:00 pm, a woman was ringing up what a store employee said was a shopping cart full of items which only added up to approximately $30. The woman attempted to pay with cash, but the self-checkout station only accepted cards. A store employee then had to take over the transaction so that the suspect could pay with cash. At that time, the employee began re-scanning items and noticed that some of the items were ringing up lower than they should have which led the employee to believe the tags had been tampered with. The woman claimed that the prices reflected what was on the shelf. The employee kept scanning items, but the woman left most of the items that she'd scanned herself in her cart and decided not to purchase them. She only bought a small number of the items and left the others behind after paying. The employee then reviewed security camera footage and saw the woman was "skip scanning" items, only scanning a few of the items and placing the others in the bagging area without scanning them.

The suspect is a white female, with long dark hair who wore a white top and jeans in the store with sunglasses on top of her head. A picture of the woman is included with this article. Anyone who knows this woman's identity is asked to please contact Officer Tyler McBrayer by email at smcbrayer@daltonga.gov
