DPD Investigating Apparent Double Murder-Suicide
UPDATED Sunday, May 25th, 2025 2:00 PM - The Dalton Police Department has identified the victims in this crime. Investigators say that preliminary findings of the investigation indicated that 37-year old Kevin Andrew Akins of Dalton shot and killed his wife, 35-year old Rebeca Nicole Akins at her residence at an apartment at 1320 Murray Avenue sometime during the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 21st. Investigators say that Akins then went to an apartment residence at 1805 Shadow Lane where he shot and killed his girlfriend, 33-year old Cindel Mae Rhoden and then shot and killed himself.

The Dalton Police Department is investigating three shooting deaths at two different locations which investigators believe are connected. Preliminary information indicates that a man shot and killed his wife at her home earlier this week before traveling to his girlfriend’s residence where he shot and killed his girlfriend and then himself. At this time, the names of the deceased are not being released pending family notifications.
Police were dispatched to an apartment residence on Murray Avenue shortly before 6:00 pm Friday evening, May 23rd to check on the welfare of a woman after coworkers reported that she had not been seen or heard from in several days. After being unable to get anyone to come to the door, officers were let into the residence by apartment staff and discovered the woman’s body with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Detectives were immediately notified and an investigation started. Detectives were soon able to find surveillance video of the suspect leaving the apartment at approximately 6:00 am on Wednesday, May 21st.
During the course of the evening, investigators were able to track the suspect’s vehicle to an apartment complex on Shadow Lane where it was located in a parking lot. While waiting for a search warrant for an apartment unit at the location in the early morning hours Saturday, police saw a man arrive at the scene and enter the apartment using a key. Police later learned that he was the second victim’s father and had come to the scene to check on her after she had not been heard from for a few days. The man then came back outside and called 911 to report that he’d found his daughter and another man shot to death. Investigators secured the scene and found that the suspect had apparently shot and killed the woman before killing himself.
The investigation of these killings is continuing.
