The City of Dalton is currently accepting applications for the full-time position of Public Works Director.  A four year degree in Civil Engineering (or related discipline) is preferred and a minimum of 5 years of progressive responsibilities and supervisory experience in the field or a combination of professional experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities to perform the job.

General responsibilities include but are not limited to:  supervising four Division Managers; preparing department’s annual operating budget; administering various capital programs including projects funded by SPLOST and bond proceeds; oversight of infrastructure & general construction capital improvement projects; oversight of fleet operations; oversight and planning of Department staffing needs; overseeing work assignments of seven (7) department divisions (Administration, Traffic, Street Maintenance, Stormwater, Sanitation, Landscaping & Fleet Maintenance); oversight of the City’s street network and municipal storm sewer system maintenance and regulatory programs; creating policies and standard operating procedures to ensure that all Public Works activities are in compliance with federal and state laws and standards; responding to questions/concerns from the general public; visiting worksites as necessary; working with Division Managers to schedule work crews; overseeing department operations during emergency situations, such as ice & snow, wind storms, flooding events, etc.; and responding to emergency situations after normal working hours as needed.
