On Tuesday, the Dalton Fire Department named Austin Williams as the agency's Firefighter of the Year. He was presented with the honor at the monthly meeting of the Dalton Public Safety Commission.

Firefighter Williams joined the department in 2017. Chief Matt Daniel said Tuesday that Williams has worked over the past nine years to continue his training and professional development, working "tirelessly" to perfect his craft.

"Austin is nearing completion of all the necessary training and certifications to become a member of the department's Special Operations Team," Chief Daniel told the Public Safety Commission on Tuesday. "This requires a level of commitment and dedication that speaks volumes about his loyalty to our department."

Chief Daniel also pointed out that Williams has recently become certified as a peer counselor to support the mental health of his fellow firefighters. He earned his certification from the Georgia Department of Public Safety's Peer Support Program.

"By completing (that program), he has gained the tools necessary to support the mental well-being of firefighters both within our department and across the state," Chief Daniel said. "Firefighter Williams sets the example for others to follow and is humble in his approach and demeanor."

Williams was selected for the honor by a vote of his fellow firefighters. Chief Daniel said that the selection was based on Williams' commitment to the community and his enthusiasm for the profession.
