June 3rd Mayor and Council Meeting Notes

Monday, June 10th, 2024

The Dalton Mayor and Council met on Monday, June 3rd for their first meeting of the month. The meeting was preceeded by a work session for the council members which featured an update on the DEO Clinic's operations in the Mack Gaston Community Center as well as an update from City Administrator Andrew Parker on various City projects.

During the meeting, the Council voted to: 

  • Approve City Ordinance 24-14 Amending Chapter 2 of the City Code of Ordinances - This amendment updates Chapter 2 of City Code to ensure compliance and agreement with the new City Charter.   • Approve a MOU for the Urban Garden Project - The memorandum of understanding between Limestone Valley Resource Conservation and Development Council and the City provides for the development of an urban garden near the drainage structure along Trammel Street near Westwood School and the Creative Arts Guild. The project will use funds from a federal grant that the Parks and Recreation Department won for the creation of urban gardens. You can review the MOU by clicking here.   • Approve a professional services agreement for the design of an expansion of the West Hill Cemetery with a new columbarium - The professional services agreement with the Arcadis engineering design firm includes design support for the expansion of the cemetery and a new columbarium structure to the north of Suitcase Simpson Drive. The master plan will include engineering and architectural services. The cost of the contract is $163,771 which will be paid from a general fund budget amendment. The council also heard the first reading of two ordinances that would rezone two parcels of property. The first, Ordinance 24-15 would rezone a residential parcel at 900 Riverbend Road to Neighborhood Commercial C-1. The second, Ordinance 24-16, would rezone a parcel at 1127 Riverbend Drive to Rural Residential R-5. You can watch this portion of the meeting by clicking here.

Local swim coach Jason Meszaros spoke during the public comment session to voice concerns about the progress of construction at the John Davis Recreation Center due to the pool being closed and requested an update on the status of the project. The meeting closed with an executive session to discuss real estate matters. Portions of meetings in executive session are not open to the public.
